Trust me, when I first started learning about all these things, that was my first reaction too! It almost sounded like some sort of a disease! “You have chakras!” NOOOOOOO!
Well, you do. And like everything is energy and made up of energy, so is your physical body. Your physical body has energy centers.
So what is a chakra?
The word translated means “wheel.” These wheels are energy centers scattered throughout your body that rotate, pulsate, and spin. There are many mini-energy centers in your body but there are seven main energy centers that go from the crown of your head all the way down to the very base of your spine.
Typically, these energy centers are balanced and move well, like a well-oiled wheel. The energy exchange is free and clear with no blockages. Energy isn’t entering or escaping too quickly. Everything is balanced and just right. But what happens when energy is leaving a chakra too quickly or a chakra is closed? It can lead to all sorts of complications that may even manifest in your health!
Where are they located?
Don’t worry. I’m going to leave a meditation at the end of this article so you can be introduced to your little friends.
Chakra #1: The Root Chakra. Located at the base of your spine and associated with the color red, this chakra is responsible for keeping your grounded and connected to earth energy. This chakra is responsible for giving you what you need to live and survive. When it’s balanced, you’re at peace when you think about things like money, employment, and a place to live. Imbalanced? Expect anxiety issues and even some lower back issues.
Chakra #2: The Sacral Chakra. This chakra is below your belly button and associated with the color orange. It is responsible for your creativity and for having fun and enjoying life (think of that big belly laugh you get when something is funny)! When it’s balanced, you can enjoy life and all it has to offer. You can have a drink without becoming an alcoholic. Imbalanced? You tend to develop an addictive personality and are restless.
Chakra #3: The Solar Plexus. This chakra starts right in your belly button and is associated with the color yellow. This is your intuitive (link) chakra, responsible for your gut feelings, your confidence and your knowing. When it’s balanced, you can see clearly, you act wisely, and you’re sure of yourself and your personal truth. Imbalanced? You may be impulsive, a micromanager, and devoid of emotion and sympathy.
Chakra #4: The Heart Chakra. This chakra is located directly on your heart and is associated with the color green. It does exactly what you think it does—it’s associated with love for yourself and others, compassion, and kindness. Balanced, you can feel love and compassion for all things even in the most unlovely situations. Imbalanced? You take on being the “strong one” or the dumping ground for other people’s problems. You take care of others before you take care of yourself.
Chakra #5: The Throat Chakra. This chakra is located on your throat and is associated with the color blue. This chakra gives voice to you and your truth’s. You don’t trip over words or your truth, but you speak it honestly, openly, and clearly. When it’s balanced, you can speak the truth in love. The truth may hurt, but you can communicate it in a way that’s not denigrating. Imbalanced? You may be one of those people who talks because they like the sounds of their own voice or speak very loudly to try to command attention.
Chakra #6: The Third Eye Chakra. This chakra is located on your forehead, between your eyebrows and is associated with the color indigo. This chakra has everything to do with psychic development, psychic energy, and intuition. When it’s balanced, you are at one and in harmony with your spirituality and spiritual truth. Imbalanced? You may spend an inordinate amount of time on things like the church, prayer, the Bible (or other religious texts) tarot, Spirit, astrology, numerology, etc. and depend on them so much that you can’t have a normal life or conversation without them.
Chakra #7: The Crown Chakra. This chakra is located at the crown of your head and is associated with the color violet. This is the chakra that is responsible for our interconnectedness as humanity and to the Universe as a whole. That feeling you get when there’s been a terrorist attack, for example, is perceived by your crown chakra. Balanced? You’re spiritually open and you have that Christ Consciousness without fear. Imbalanced? You become self-important and think you’re some sort of god or deity and have delusions of grandeur.
Reading through all of this, I’m sure you can see why our energy centers need to be in perfect balance and alignment. Here are a few guided meditations that I recommend that you do to balance your chakras:
