Anytime I’m about to perform a tarot reading for a client, the first thing I like to do is break the ice with them. I never like to sit down and jump right the reading. I like to ask how their day is going, how they found out about me, and even joke around a little bit.
When people come for readings, even though they say they are not, they tend to be more than just a little nervous even if they’ve had readings in the past. It’s natural! You’re about to ask some very personal and hard questions about your life and, if you’re honest with yourself, you do have a hope for the outcome.
Below, I have comprised a list of five different ways to ensure you have the best tarot card reading possible.
1. Keep an open mind and be receptive.
Chances are that you’ve decided to get a tarot reading because you want some clarity about a situation in your life. If your tarot reader is good, he is never going to tell you what he thinks you want to hear. If he’s great, he is going to tell you the truth of what he sees in the cards as it pertains to what you’re asking. Even if what he is telling you is different than what you hoped to hear, try to not resist the message. I have had clients tell me, after asking about a relationship and being told that the relationship was going to end that, “I think you’re wrong. I plan to marry this person.”
Don’t sit for a reading if you’re not willing to take aboard whatever the cards may reveal.
2. Know what you’re asking.
There are times that people really do want just a general reading or whatever the cards show. However, it helps readers immensely when you know what you’re asking. Instead of telling your reader, “I want to know about relationships.” Well, what exactly about relationships? Do you have one? Are you hoping to get into one? Familial relationships? Romantic relationships? Friendships? These are all relationships.
A better question would be, “I would like to know if marriage with my significant other is in my future.” The more specific you are in your questions, the more specific I can be. We don’t necessarily need your life story or even any granular detail. However, we do need a bit of clarity in your ask.
3. Save the tests for the exam room.
I cannot tell you how many people come to me for a reading and only want a general reading and will not budge on that. When I pull a tarot spread for them and read it, they reply, “I wanted to see if you were going to pick up on X situation.”
Listen. All time is valuable, yours and mine included. I think I speak for all tarot readers when I say we are not here to pass some sort of test to prove that we can read or that we should be doing a reading for you. Save those types of proving grounds for another day. I think it’s safe to say that no other profession endures the level of “prove yourself to me” scrutiny than a tarot reader or psychic. It’s insulting.
4. Trust your reader (even if you can read tarot).
This is a big one. There are those out there that will sit down for a reading who have either had dozens of readings done with various individuals or have the ability to read tarot themselves. When you interpret the tarot differently or have written different tarot spreads for yourself, they often tell you that you’re doing it wrong, you’re reading the cards wrong, and how you can improve. This has happened to me twice.
Listen, if you can read tarot yourself, by all means DO! But do not employ the services of a tarot reader if you’re going to automatically dismiss everything they say, tell them everything they’re doing is wrong, or try to read your own cards. Each tarot reader has their own relationship with the deck and the way they read intuitively. Respect that.
Trust that they have your best intentions at heart and are reading the tarot intuitively for you. Remember, be open-minded!
5. Relax!
I know getting a reading can make you anxious and nervous, but there’s nothing to fear! So before going into your reading, try doing some deep breathing exercises so you are peaceful and open when you sit down for your reading.
I hope these tips helps and I can’t wait to read for you!
